The Compulsions Featuring Guns N’ Roses, New York Dolls Members: ‘Dirty Fun’ Album Due In April – Blabbermouth.net

THE COMPULSIONS, the critically acclaimed New York City rock ‘n’ roll band founded by Rob Carlyle that also features GUNS N’ ROSES drummer Frank Ferrer, guitarist Richard Fortus and former HANOI ROCKS/NEW YORK DOLLS bassist Sami Yaffa, will release its second album, “Dirty Fun”, on April 14 via Compulsions Records. The group will perform a record-release show on Friday, March 27 at Mercury Lounge in New York City. Expect more U.S. dates to be announced soon.

After multiple EPs, and countless shows under their collective belt, THE COMPULSIONS released its full-length debut, “Beat The Devil”, in 2011.

“When I was a kid, music wasn’t something you’d multitask to,” attests Carlyle. “When you heard a song like ‘Black Dog’ for the first time, you’d drop everything you were doing and just listen to it. But a lot of today’s music seems like sonic wallpaper. There’s nothing intrusive or memorable about it, and most of it sounds really polite. We’re definitely not going for that.”

“Lucky”, the first single off “Dirty Fun”, is layered with roots-y guitar interplay, honky-tonk piano and a soaring horn section, and is a fitting introduction to the album’s ragged glory.

“A lot of our early songs were about being down and out,” says Carlyle. “This time around, I wanted to write something more positive. THE ROLLING STONES have ‘Happy’, so I guess ‘Lucky’ is THE COMPULSIONS’ feel-good song.”

Other highlights on “Dirty Fun” include “House Of Rock”, which paints a vivid picture of the seedy musical underworld that inspired the album, while opener “Hellbound Babies”, punctuated by unholy harmonica, blazing guitars and a chorus of soul sisters, spawned the album title. “Sonically, that song’s got everything on it but the kitchen sink,” Carlyle smiles. “The lyrics are about a band that refuses to quit, even though they’re going broke.”

THE COMPULSIONS pay homage to one of rock ‘n’ roll’s earliest and most iconic heroes with a cover of Little Richard’s 1956 classic “Long Tall Sally”. But this ain’t no typical bar band version. Carlyle & Co. update “Sally” with a raunchier edge of their own and a whopping kick up the ass that lands the tune squarely in the 21st century.

“Dirty Fun” track listing:

01. Hellbound Babies
02. Silly Little Woman
03. Evil Bastards
04. Lucky
05. House Of Rock
06. Long Tall Sally
07. The Feel
08. I Still Got The Hots For You, Baby
09. Stay Eazy
10. Buzz Awhile

AlternativeNation.net | Official Facebook Page Launched For Guns N’ Roses Drummer’s Early Band, The Beautiful

Before joining Guns N’ Roses in 2006, Frank Ferrer was the drummer of an alt-metal band during the late ’80s/early ’90s, called the Beautiful, of which an official Facebook page was recently launched. The page includes rare photos, info, and songs to hear – check it out by clicking here. The Beautiful only issued one EP a self-titled release in 1990 and one full-length Storybook in 1992 for the Warner Bros. subsidiary Giant Records, and according to the band’s Wikipedia entry, was once described as “A mix of Jane’s Addiction at their most wistful and the broody flowery sway of Saigon Kick. Ultra-cool without having to try, it manages to glint but always remain exquisite from a far and is happy to lace its edges with darkness.”One of the more overlooked alt-rock recordings of the genre’s golden early ’90s period, the Storybook album spawned a song for which a video would be filmed, “John Doe” which aired once or twice on MTV’s Headbangers Ball, and included other standout tracks the acoustic “The We in Me,” the epic title track, etc. that fit in perfectly with such popular acts of the era like Jane’s Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, and Stone Temple Pilots. Unfortunately, this would prove to be the final release from the band.Ferrer supplied drums on four songs from G n’ R’s Chinese Democracy album – “Better,” “If the World,” “There Was a Time,” and “I.R.S.”
