Rock Photograher Katarina Benzova Shares Her Story (INTERVIEW) – Glide Magazine

A couple of times this year, MY ROOTS will give you a glimpse of someone behind the scenes of the music we all love. We begin with a peek inside the life and career of music photographer Katarina Benzova. She is the official photographer for both Guns N Roses and the Dead Daisies, but did you know that she was once a supermodel walking the catwalks in designer clothes? Fate would eventually intervene after attending a GNR concert with a friend, taking some photos and having them seen by the band. Now she travels the world in a different realm and has captured breathtaking black & white images of Axl Rose, Billy Gibbons, Paul Stanley, Keith Richards, Courtney Love and Steven Tyler, among others. “Katarina captures life through her lens in a remarkable way which leaves one to wonder if there’s really glass between the subject and eye,” ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons shared with me recently. “Stark realism is at the forefront of her aim.” Music photographer Vera Harder considers her photos, “Very classy.”

So for this young woman, born and raised amongst the beauty of Slovakia, who never dreamed of being a photographer, she has become one of music’s up & coming legends in the making. After spending the holidays in her snowy homeland, Benzova gave us the scoop on her life, behind and in front of, the all-seeing lens.

ALL YOU NEED IS JUST A LITTLE PATIENCE A generation later, original Guns N’ Roses manager Vicky Hamilton has completed a tell-all | Metal Sludge

HOLLYWOOD — Vicky Hamilton was the original manager of Guns N’ Roses in the 1980s when the young band was struggling just to afford some guitar strings, to put some Top Ramen on the table and, if they were lucky, to have a temporary roof over the head.

Cathouse_Block_SwagShe’s all grown up now, just like Axl Rose, Slash and the rest, and the story of why Hamilton and Guns N’ Roses went their separate ways once the band singed with Geffen Records is now being told without any details being left out, as Hamilton has completed her autobiography expected to be released in 2015.

Hamilton celebrated by hosting a star-studded party on Saturday, Dec. 13 in a stately mansion atop the Hollywood Hills, as a packed gathering of VIPs and industry insiders enjoyed a little taste supplied by Miss Hamilton, who stood at a podium and read snippets of the upcoming book to everyone.

The memoir is called “Appetite For Dysfunction.” A publishing deal is still being ironed out, but judging by Hamilton’s samples and the ecstatic reactions of everyone in the room, this tell-all is going to really be something special.

“I have some good memories, but it’s a little bittersweet,” said Hamilton, who never made millions of dollars like Guns N’ Roses did. “When I kind of went back and looked at the shit that went down, I gained 14 pounds while writing the book. It’s hard to look at the past and to keep moving forward. …. I don’t know. Axl will probably sue me. He sues everyone else.”

Hamilton readily admits the book is going to “hurt some feelings.”

“Some of it will,” Hamilton said. “No one wants to look at their humble beginnings, but there it is.”

About 80′s, Guns N’ Roses and being a strong woman, Pamela Manning | Multi Baby Doll

This one might be the most special interview ever. Special, important or exciting, no matter how you call it. Pamela Manning has passed some of her lifetime with a lot of groups that I love, especially with Guns N’Roses. She witnessed the best times of music, entertainment and other things and once she realised that there is something wrong, she succeeded to change her life in a better way. She is strong, successful, decisive and still very beautiful. She has no difference from that famous iconic photograph with Axl Rose. This interview is more than a conversation with secrets, it is a proof of how a strong woman can dominate her own life…

“Well, well, well, you never can tell”, an interview with Guns N’ Roses insider “My Michelle” Young | Legendary Rock Interviews

I told Michelle Young she was a “civilian”, indicating her current clean and so discrete status as a normal, everyday mom to her son placed her far away from the publicity whore status of most of the bands and entertainers we’ve interviewed over the years. That said, it would also be fair to say that between growing up with the guys who would form Guns N’ Roses, inspiring a classic song and having some interesting dealings with some of those guys, she might have a few stories to tell. After spending some time in the artist management biz (working with Stone Temple Pilots, among others), “My Michelle” has absolutely kept a lower profile in recent years and reached a place where she’s comfortable talking about those fuzzy Sunset Strip memories. I recently had the pleasure of talking with Michelle about it all, read on…

Katarina Benzova | People photography | THE OPEN

At just 13 , Slovakian born, Katarina Benzova would leave home on an international modeling contract, sending her to live in all of the major fashion cities around the globe. It was through her extensive travels during her career as a fashion model that her ambitions finally outgrew the runway, prompting a deeper need to rediscover both herself and the rest of the world from the other side of the lens. And it’d be through the lens that she’d grab the attention of none other than the iconic Guns n’ Roses front-man, Axl Rose. Axl was so moved by the photos that Kat took of the band at a show in Vienna, that he immediately hired her as the bands exclusive photographer. She continues to tour with Gn’R as their tour photographer. She has quickly become one of the most in demand rock photographers and has shot and worked with other legendary bands like The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Kiss, Motley Crue, ZZ Top, Courtney Love,Def Leppard, The Cult, Thin Lizzy,Van Halen, to name a few.

Kat’s work can be found in publications such as: Rolling Stone Magazine, Vogue, Classic Rock Magazine, SPIN, NME, LA Times, etc

Watch Slash Cover Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ | Ultimate Classic Rock

Ozzy Osbourne took home the Global Icon Award at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards on Nov. 9, and Slash was on hand to pay tribute with a live cover of the classic Ozzy cut ‘Crazy Train.’

You can watch the performance above, which pulls pro-shot footage from the ceremony — including a couple of reaction shots from Osbourne, who was sitting in the front row with his wife Sharon.

Watching Slash onstage is nothing new for Ozzy; in fact, earlier this year, the two teamed up for a performance of Black Sabbath‘s ‘Paranoid,’ and Slash was also part of the Ozzy Osbourne & Friends tour in 2012.

Slash paid tribute to Ozzy in advance of the event, telling MTV, “Aside from being one of the mavericks of heavy metal he’s also one of the greatest entertainers and performers I’ve ever seen … He has amazing control over his audience. It’s actually stunning to be close, at the side of the stage and actually watch the command over his audience so yeah, it’s pretty intense.”

Guns N’ Roses’ Early Days Retrospective, By Marc Canter

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Guns N’ Roses, and Marc Canter, a friend of ex-guitarist Slash, was the first person to document the band. Canter would photograph and film the band, and collect tickets and ads from the very first day that Guns N’ Roses formed. He wanted to document his best friend’s band, which ended up being one of the most successful and well known rock bands of all time. In 2008 Canter was finally able to publish his photographic essay, detailing the band’s first historic gigs, with Reckless Road. Recently I caught up with Marc Canter, and we discussed how he got into photography, his relationships with GNR members, and why he stopped photographing the band.

IT’S SO EASY. . . METAL SLUDGE EXCLUSIVE: For the first time, here is a detailed interview with Kevin Lawrence, Axl Rose’s first-ever guitarist in a 1983 band called Rapidfire | Metal Sludge

LOS ANGELES – Axl Rose is among the biggest rock stars in the world with an estimated net worth of $150 million, and meanwhile, guitarist Kevin Lawrence from Rose’s first-ever band called Rapidfire is struggling just like the rest of us, a former internet techie who laid to rest his dreams of rock fame right around the time Guns N’ Roses was skyrocketing in the late 1980′s with “Appetite For Destruction,” one of the biggest-selling albums in history.

But did you know Rose had recorded a five-song demo with Rapidfire in 1983? After a series of false starts that included lawyers going back and forth in addition to a failed kickstarter campaign, the Rapidfire tapes are scheduled to be released Nov. 1 in the form of a worldwide CD and internet streams.

There has been a few press releases about Rapidfire through the years, plus a sample from a couple of songs has more than 100,000 hits on youtube, but in this Metal Sludge exclusive, Lawrence talks for the first time about what it was like to be in Axl Rose’s first band.

Grab a seat, shut the door, and tune in attentively. This is going to be good.

Guns N’ Roses Reunion “Gonna Happen in the Next Two Years,” Says Axl’s Ex-Manager – Music News – ABC News Radio

Craig Duswalt was Axl Rose’s personal manager during Guns N’ Roses’ Use Your Illusion tour. Now Duswalt has written a memoir, Welcome to My Jungle, about his experience with the band. As someone who had a ringside seat during the band’s last time together — during which singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash had a falling out from which they’ve never recovered — Craig has a unique perspective into the band’s interpersonal relationships.

Duswalt says he and the rest of the old-school GN’R camp think Axl and Slash are closer than ever before to patching things up, mostly because original Guns bassist Duff McKagan has recently played onstage with Guns N’ Roses, and Duswalt says they’re hoping McKagan will be an ambassador of sorts. “Duff is paving the way to open the gates again,” says Duswalt. “Axl and Duff are really getting along well at the concerts, so there’s an opening.”

Duswalt says Duff stepping in to cover for present-day Guns bassist Tommy Stinson while the latter’s playing a few shows with The Replacements was the first glimmer of hope in a long time. “About five years ago, Slash went to Axl’s house one day, and Axl didn’t want to see him,” says Duswalt. “We [had] thought for a while, ‘yes’ [a reunion could happen], but then it just got ugly again and we thought, ‘There’s no way.'”

The crux of the issue between Axl and Slash has always been a mystery to civilians, including even diehard Guns fans. Duswalt tells ABC News Radio, “It was a thing that happened at the end of [Use Your Illusion],” meaning there was a specific incident that precipitated the split. “There were also the differences in music,” Duswalt adds, “like Slash wanted to do more hard-rock stuff and Axl wanted to do more ballads, rock ballads. There was that difference, but there was a specific thing that happened that both of them are at odds over.”

Duswalt says when it comes to Axl and Slash, he knows “for a fact they hate each other right now. It’s bad. Axl is a loyal guy and you get on his bad side and some people don’t come back, but Slash and him were so close. We [in the old-school Guns camp] all have a feeling it will happen. It’s gonna happen in the next two years…there’s an opening because of Duff playing with Axl.”Welcome to My Jungle is available now in print and digital formats.
