AlternativeNation.net | Dave Kushner Talks Velvet Revolver Singer Search, Scott Weiland & Izzy Stradlin In AlternativeNation.net Interview

Yesterday we published an exclusive track by track look back at Velvet Revolver’s Contraband to commemorate its upcoming 10th anniversary with the band’s rhythm guitarist Dave Kushner, and today we bring you an in-depth Q&A session where Kushner candidly describes his long road to success in rock and roll, Velvet Revolver’s singer search, his relationship with Scott Weiland, Velvet Revolver’s one off reunion with Weiland in 2012, his fears of Izzy Stradlin replacing him before Velvet Revolver even got off the ground, and unreleased VR material. Kushner is honest and humble, with no agenda. This is a must read for any Velvet Revolver fan, and is one of my favorite interviews I’ve done in the 5 year history of AlternativeNation.net.

How Being Late And Volatile Was Axl Rose’s Contribution To The Guns N’ Roses Brand

Duswalt claims that Rose’s behavior was never caused by disrespect to the fans. “The myth is that they’re always late, they don’t care about their audiences, their fans, because they go on late,” Duswalt told me. “But the reality is they do care about their fans, so much so that Axl wanted to put on the best show possible. That’s why sometimes he was late because he was not ready to go at the drop of a hat. He had to prepare and sometimes it took longer for him to get into the mindset to put on what he feels is the best show.”

The mindset that Rose had to get into was in fact a state of frenzy, because he carried the weight of delivering the Gun N’ Roses experience on stage. And that experience was all about intensity, danger, violence and mayhem. It was what the fans came for. Axl Rose told journalist Mick Wall in 1990, referencing prize fighter Mike Tyson’s biography Bad Intentions, “I relate what I do to what Tyson says about when he punches someone in the head. He says he imagines hitting ‘em so hard his fist knocks their nose bone right back into their brains. He says when he goes in the ring he does it with bad intentions. Well, that’s like me getting ready to start something, like going onstage. And you gotta make sure when you knock ‘em down they stay down.” Turning the rage on or off was not always easy.

Rapidfire: The first recordings of Bill Bailey AKA Axl Rose. by Rapidfire — Kickstarter

The first ever recordings of a fresh off the bus, untattooed Bill Bailey AKA Axl Rose on a never released 1983 Rapidfire CD. Amazing!!

NEVER RELEASED Rapidfire CD from 1983, with Bill Bailey AKA Axl Rose on vocals. This was the FIRST time in a recording studio for all members of the band. This CD happens to ROCK:

In 1983 a three piece band called Rapidfire was gigging around the Los Angeles area with me, Kevin Lawrence on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Mike Hamernik on Bass and Chuck Gordon on Drums. Well… I admittedly kinda sucked as a singer, so we needed a new singer. Luckily I met a fresh off the bus, untattooed rookie named Bill Bailey, later to be known as Axl Rose, who informed me that he was a singer. I asked if he had a PA, he said “yes,” That was basically all it took. He auditioned and got the lead singer slot for Rapidfire. He was given a set of songs to learn in a week before the March 20,1983 Battle Of The Bands gig at Gazzarri’s, which he brilliantly did… By the way, we won.We rehearsed more in Chuck’s Mom’s house, gigged a bit, did a photo session, and quickly went into Telstar Studios on May 25,1983 to record five Rapidfire songs written, produced, copyrighted, and paid for by myself Kevin Lawrence. The band did a great job even though we were just a bunch of kids. With all Copyright PA and SR forms in order, as well as physical possession of the original tapes, digitized multitracks, and a payment receipt in my name, this CD of 5 songs which has never been heard by the public except for the short sample of “Ready To Rumble” is almost ready to release and in need your backing to press CDs and maybe vinyl. I hope you choose to help, get some perks, and get this piece of musical history off the ground, and in the publics hands once and for all. Its been 31 years. Let’s get “Ready To Rumble.” Thank you for your consideration… Seriously… THANK YOU!!!Kevin Lawrence

KATARINA BENZOVA: “You have to show your teeth and horns once in a while to gain respect in male dominated industry.” – GutterSociety.com

I already know something about how you became official photographer of GUNS N’ ROSES. However, I’m interested about how you responded to this offer? I suppose that night at the concert in Vienna you had no idea what awaited you in the near future… Did you simply pack your stuff and leave to the highest league of rock’n’roll?

Kind off. I was invited to another concert in Prague where I had a chance to talk to Axl and show him my photos. He liked my work, they were looking for a photographer and gave me a 2 show tryout. I had nothing to think about. I had nothing to lose. What I wasn’t expecting was that I will pass the tryout and stay with the band for three and half years now It happened really fast and my life turned upside down. I believe it wasn’t coincidence and it was suppose to happen as I found my true calling. There is a saying that says: “Magic happens when you step out of your comfort zone!” I stepped out and boom… magic happened. (laugh)
